Youth Science Academy History

Youth Science Academy was founded by Shamekia Wade in response to the critical need of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) amongst our community. STEM exposure is critical amongst youth in an effort that jobs involving science for our nation will be filled in the 21st Century. With the support of Cornerstone Community Baptist Church and SR Capital Holdings, Wade and a handful of dedicated volunteers set out to create a secure, supportive learning environment for the Community. Students receive academic support through STEM camps at Kennesaw State University, Saturday Learning Excursions at Kennesaw State U

niversity, The Youth Science Academy Wacky Fun Science Clubs, tutoring, project-based learning, and out of state field trips which broadens students’ world-view where they have the ability to engage in STEM activities that nurture their scientific development.

Today, Youth Science Academy has served over 500 youths through various outreach programs providing avenues for youth allowing them to be successful in science, by

allowing students to be curious, ask questions, design experiments, solve real-world problems, observe, classify, measure, communicate, infer, predict, utilize space/time relationships, utilize numbers, identify variables, formulate hypotheses, control variables, investigate, and define operations. YSA has developed several programs and will continue to develop more programs in the furtherance of our purposes, while effectively creating a path for recruitment and retention of underrepresented students into the STEM disciplines
